-
- There is, of course, no justification for being "rude and crass" in a
- posting. People do sometimes lose their heads and forget that they're
- addressing an audience of thousands rather than just the previous poster.
-
- > Aside from the fact that it can't _all_ be in the FAQ, why not just answer?
-
- First, because people have to be made to realize that the posting of
- frequently asked questions is a bad idea, and refusing to answer them
- is one way to get that point across. Second, because while it may not
- "_all_ be in the FAQ", the text there has been carefully crafted and
- maintained and an off-the-cuff attempt to paraphrase its answer may do
- a much worse job.

-
- I see that the FAQ list no longer answers this question in exactly this
- form, so I'll say this:
-
- Read the newsgroup for a few weeks, and you will *see* the FAQ list.
- If you need to ask, then either you have a defective newsfeeed, or you
- reveal that you've committed the impropriety of posting to a newsgroup
- without reading it for a while first.
-
- The FAQ list is also available in the expanded form of a 400-page book:
- "C Programming FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions" by Steve Summit (Addison-
- Wesley, 1996, ISBN 0-201-84519-9). I might be biased because Steve is a
- friend of mine, but one of the reasons he got to be that is that he wrote
- such a good FAQ list (and listened to my suggestions about it too).
- I recommend the book highly.
-
- I will mail Glenn a current copy of the FAQ list.
